PUNE: After more than 70 years, the water treatment plant at the Cantonment Water Works is set to shut down by the end of the year.
Areas under its distribution will receive treated water from an upcoming plant at the Parvati Water Works.
“The water treatment plant at Cantonment was built in the 1940s, and had an operational life of about 30 years. However, it continued to be used with some upgrades to the treatment facility .
Over the years, the structure of the plant underwent wear and tear and hence needed to be shut and rebuilt,“ said Mandar Sardeshpande of Parvati Water Works.
According to the head of the Pune Municipal Corporation's water department, V G Kulkarni, “The Cantonment Water Works plant will be shut down by December, once the new plant at Parvati becomes operational.“
“The latter will supply wa ter to the areas under Cantonment through a pipeline until a new Cantonment Water Works WTP is planned and built, which may begin in the next financial year,“ he said.
